However, new regulations that came in to effect September 2011 has allowed this term to be removed to make the ingredients more user friendly to read and avoid confusion.

Because Dodson & Horrell are committed to using only the best ingredients in the manufacture of their pet foods, the antioxidants and preservatives used in production are actually: mixed tocopherols (also known as vitamin E), vitamin C and rosemary extract which are natural antioxidants helping to maintain the stability of the food.

These antioxidants are declared on the bag as follows: “EC permitted antioxidants: mixed tocopherols, vitamin C and rosemary extract”. Translated into laymen’s terms this actually means: “The antioxidants being used in this product are permitted for use in pet food by the EC and they are as follows: mixed tocopherols, vitamin C and rosemary extract” and nothing more sinister than that.

Both Chudleys and Autarky products are manufactured using a fixed recipe, which ensures quality and consistency in every batch. They only contain raw materials, which are sourced from non-genetically modified origins, using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible.

In addition, they contain the parts of the chicken carcass, which are nutritionally beneficial to the animal; for instance, no feathers or undesirable parts are included.

All chicken used in Chudleys and Autarky recipes is of human grade. Chudleys and Autarky products are made in the UK in a dedicated medication-free pet food plant, controlled under ISO and HACCP systems.

All products are manufactured in accordance with the rules of the quality assurance scheme ISO 9001:2000.

The procedures followed ensure traceability of each ingredient, in some cases back to the field in which it was grown, essential when requiring the highest quality ingredients.

In addition to this, ISO 9001:2000 ensures all daily routines have the strictest of quality control systems, from the delivery of raw ingredients through the computer controlled blending of those raw ingredients; the extrusion process which cooks the raw ingredients, to the laboratory that tests every cooked batch, before giving authorisation for the food to be bagged and palletised.

So in conclusion, all of our products use only the best ingredients which contain no harmful additives, chemicals or anti-oxidants. All the ingredients are listed and nothing is hidden.

Dogs & Chocolate

Dogs & Chocolate

Q: Why is it bad to feed my dog Chocolate?

A: Because it CAN KILL!!!!

If you enjoy chocolate at this festive time of year you may be tempted to share it with your dog, but you need to know that chocolate is BAD dogs. If you give your dog just a few pieces of chocolate it can have fatal consequences.

Chocolate is extremely toxic for dogs as it contains THEOBROMINE, a substance that belongs to the group of methylxanines. Depending on the type of chocolate and the manufacturer, the amounts of THEOBROMINE will differ. However, dark chocolate is the most toxic for dogs, while white chocolate is relatively safe.

Another reason why chocolate may be bad for dogs is that some chocolates contain caffeine, which is another toxic substance for dogs.

How Much Chocolate Is Toxic?
Any amount of chocolate your dog eats may cause poisoning, however the amount of chocolate your dog eats that is not fatal will depend on several factors:

The size of the dog; smaller dogs may die even from ingesting reduced amountsof chocolate.

The amount of THEOBROMINE in the chocolate.

The amount of caffeine.

The strength of the immune system of the dog.

Generally speaking, a dose of 50 to 100 mg or THEOBROMINE per body weight may be fatal. However, some dogs may die from even less than that. The bottom line is that chocolate is toxic and shouldn't be given in any amount.

Even if the dog does not die after eating a bite of chocolate, it can still cause a lot of complications and you will need to visit the vet to remove the toxic substances from his body.

Signs of Chocolate Poisoning

If you suspect or you know your dog has consumed chocolate then watch out for these symptoms.

Frequent vomiting; you may see bits of undigested chocolate in the vomit.

Extreme agitation.

Drinking a lot of water.

Seizures .

Excessive drooling.

Pale gums.

Irregular pulse.

Unconsciousness.

Lack of coordination.

Sudden collapse.

Coma.

These symptoms will typically appear within a few hours after eating the chocolate and you need to get instant help.

If take your dog to the vet within four hours of consuming the chocolate, the toxins may not have not entered the dog's blood flow and the condition may be reversible. The vet will remove the contents of the dog's stomach and put him under liquid therapy.

Lets take the dog to Spain

Once you have all the information from DEFRA regarding the compulsory vaccinations and documentation required for travel with your pets within Europe, you must also pay attention to the specific laws and requirements necessary for the particular country you are visiting.

With a few extra precautions holidaying in Spain with your dog should, and will be an enjoyable experience for both of you.

National and local dog laws

One of the most important things that will affect you in Spain, (as well as the heat) is that there is a marked difference between the “Dangerous Dogs Act” in the UK and Spain. You can obtain an English version of the Spanish law regarding dangerous dogs from the following website: www.k9handlers.com .

The law covers requirements such as compulsory personal liability insurance required and which breeds should be muzzled in public. No matter what breed ALL dogs in public places must be on a leash. Another aspect to be aware of is that apart from the national law many of the different regions and municipalities have made their own amendments peculiar to each autonomous region.

For example Andalucia is the only region which lists the Doberman as a dangerous breed. Many towns in Spain have recently introduced new “Anti fouling laws” to ensure owners pick up after their pets. The fines imposed by these towns can range from 70€ to 500€, in Marbella this also applies to dogs urinating on sidewalks.

Sunshine and heat

As well as packing all your sun protection gear for yourself you must remember that the sun and heat in Spain will greatly affect your dog. Remember that in temperatures of 38º and higher, dogs can get sunburnt so great care must be taken to keep them in the shade during the hotter times of the day. Closely shaven dogs can also be more susceptible to mosquito bites.

As every owner knows dogs do not sweat, they have to pant to lose body heat, however they also lose heat from the pads on their feet. With most sidewalks in Spanish towns constructed from paving tiles - which in the peak of summer can and DO reach temperatures of 40º plus walking your dog at the hottest time of day will raise their body temperature drastically – as well as being uncomfortable!, So pick the coolest time of day (early morning or dusk) to exercise them.

Dogs are NOT allowed on beaches during the summer season, from March to Oct, but some coastal towns are now starting to ban dogs from the beaches all year round.

Summer Hazards for dogs in Spain

One major problem for dogs is mosquito’s whose bite can cause Canine Leishmaniasis. This disease can also be transmitted between dogs but can easily be prevented with the purchase of a special “Scalibor” repellent collar from any Spanish vet for as little as 25€ for large dog.

February March and April is the season for Pine Processionary Caterpillar found mainly in woodlands. They are very poisonous and dogs can sniff or lick the caterpillars and the tiny hairs can cause severe irritation and if ingested can be fatal.

Dog parks and training school

With a few sensible precautions bringing your dog to Spain will be pleasurable for both of you. Most Spanish people love dogs as much as the British and many coastal towns are now dedicating specific park areas solely for the use of dogs.

There are also many English run training schools that will be delighted to take you on board for classes at all levels to keep YOU and your dog entertained during your stay.

Vegetarian Diet For Dogs

Many people enjoy the vegetarian lifestyle today, either for health or ethical reasons. Some people choose to extend this dietary philosophy to their pets as well, which has prompted the marketing of commercial vegetarian dog and cat foods. There is a spectrum of foods and ingredients that may be included or excluded from a "vegetarian" diet, depending on one’s definition.

At minimum, it usually means that most meat sources are excluded from the diet (such as beef, pork, lamb, poultry, and sometimes fish). More restricted diets exclude other foods of animal origin, such as egg and dairy products. Perhaps the most extreme example would be a "vegan" diet, where all foods and ingredients of foods, including vitamin and mineral sources, are excluded if they are derived from animals. Provided foods are carefully combined in appropriate proportions, vegetarian or vegan diets for people can be very nutritious and tasty.

However, is the same true for dogs and cats?

Why feed a vegetarian diet to pets?

Many people consider their vegetarian diets to be more healthful than the traditional western diet that includes animal-source foods, and some assume the same to be true for dogs and cats. However, the health reasons that people cite as the basis for their own eating habits may not apply where pets are concerned. For example, dogs and cats do not suffer from problems such as high cholesterol or coronary artery disease at anywhere near the incidence as do humans. Thus, reducing intake of saturated fats and cholesterol by cutting meats out of the diet would not be of any real health benefit in pets.

Another concern may be about bacterial contamination of the meat ingredients, which could cause disease when consumed by pets. This may be a legitimate concern when eating raw or undercooked meat or poultry, but properly processed dry or canned pet foods pose a far lesser risk of disease transmission than raw fruits and vegetables. Some vegetarian diets for pets are also offered on the premise that they will prevent food allergies. The true incidence of food allergies in pets is relatively low.

Regardless, allergies can also be developed against proteins in plants just as easily, so cutting out the meat sources does little to prevent this problem.

Potential problems

For example, the protein and calcium needs of the dog and cat are much higher than those for humans. These nutrients are most easily provided through animal-derived ingredients. Some plants, such as soy, are high in protein, but the amino acids within the protein are not as balanced as they are for most animal-source ingredients. Dogs and cats also need a dietary source of vitamin B12, a substance not found in most plants.

All animals "need" this vitamin, but plant-eating animals such as cattle and sheep can make their own through the action of bacteria in their gastrointestinal tracts, provided there are adequate amounts of the mineral cobalt in the diet (which is found in plants). As mentioned above, the cat has even more unique nutritional requirements that make it harder to get adequate amounts of all required nutrients in the diet without using some animal-source ingredients.

Can’t these nutrients be replaced using synthetic substitutes? Yes, it is theoretically possible to formulate a diet that meets all these specific needs using synthetic additives.

However, it becomes more expensive and far less reliable to do it this way. Even when a product is formulated to meet the nutritional needs "on paper," it may not work in the "real" world. For example, plants also contain phytates, substances that bind calcium and trace minerals, lowering their "bioavailability." So, even when minerals are provided at levels that appear adequate, they cannot be properly absorbed and used by the animal.

There are adjustments in the AAFCO Dog and Cat Food Nutrient Profiles to account for decreases in bioavailability of nutrients, but these are made on the assumption that both animal and plant-source ingredients are used. It is impossible to tell whether these levels would still be adequate for a completely plant-based diet.

Treat at the right time

You can't just try and distract your dog AFTER the fact with treats.

TREATS to a dog is like Money is to you and I.

If I was your child, and was violently screaming at your neighbors and telling them how much I hated them, and you kept throwing 100€ notes at me to try and distract me... then wonder why the problem wasn't getting fixed, you might find yourself getting carted off by the men in white coats.

You wouldn't think of doing that with a child, so why would we think it would work for a dog?

If you're going to use rewards to help your dog overcome bad behavior they have to be given BEFORE your dog has an emotional flare up.

Even being a millisecond late is worthless.

Andalucía Law of Animal Protection

CALAHONDA PET DOG SCHOOL

"Owners Obligations"

The owners of the animals have must keep them:

In good sanitary and hygienic conditions.

In accommodation adequate for the size and breed.

Provide the feeding necessary for their normal development.

Provide personal identification within three months after their birth. Shofer and Ilana R. Reisner, veterinarians with the Department of Clinical Studies at University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, produced a 30-item survey for dog owners who made behavioural service appointments at Penn Vet.

In the questionnaire, dog owners were asked how they had previously treated aggressive behaviour, whether there was a positive, negative or neutral effect on the dogs' behaviour, and whether aggressive responses resulted from the method they used. Owners were also asked where they learned of the training technique they employed. 140 surveys were completed.

Some Techniques Triggered Aggression

The highest frequency of aggression occurred in response to aversive (or punishing) interventions, even when the intervention was indirect:

• Hitting or kicking the dog (41% of owners reported aggression)
• Growling at the dog (41%)
• Forcing the dog to release an item from its mouth (38%)
• "Alpha roll" (forcing the dog onto its back and holding it down) (31%)
• "Dominance down" (forcing the dog onto its side) (29%)
• Grabbing the jowls or scruff (26%)
• Staring the dog down (staring at the dog until it looks away) (30%)
• Spraying the dog with water pistol or spray bottle (20%)
• Yelling "no" (15%)
• Forced exposure (forcibly exposing the dog to a stimulus – such as tile floors, noise or people – that frightens the dog) (12%)

In contrast, non-aversive methods resulted in much lower frequency of aggressive responses:

• Training the dog to sit for everything it wants (only 2% of owners reported aggression)
• Rewarding the dog for eye contact (2%)
• Food exchange for an item in its mouth instead of forcing the item out (6%)
• Rewarding the dog for "watch me" (0%)

Extracts from: Dr. Yin's Animal Behaviour and Medicine Blog.

How to stop your dog jumping up at the door

To put this into context let me give you an example...

Have you ever watched a mother be at a social gathering, notice that her child was getting into trouble, and turn to tell her child to BEHAVE?

And then pay attention to what the child does after the mother turns her attention back to what she was previously doing?

What often times will happen is that mothers will get caught up in social interactions for MUCH longer then the child wishes she would. So the kid get's bored and starts looking for stuff to do.

And when he finally finds something interesting, like playing with Grandmas VERY breakable antiques, he gets yelled at.

But if you pay attention to the child, you'll often times notice the child get a mischievous look on his face and go right back to playing with the same object... but this time he's reaching for that object with one eye on his Mother, actually HOPING he get's caught.

Isn't this interesting?

The child could often times find much more entertaining things to play with, but they seem to like to play with things that get their mother's attention.
And in effect, these mothers are "Paying For Trouble". They're rewarding their child with the attention and relief from boredom that they crave with exactly what the kid wants... Mommy's attention!

And if this goes unchecked, it becomes a bad habit.

But because it's EASIER for a mother to just yell at the child instead of giving the child attention when he's NOT causing trouble the problem get's worse.

Clever mothers who make an effort to go pay attention to their kids who are BEHAVING in public usually have better behaved kids.

So I always find it helpful to try to ask myself if I'm accidently

'Paying my Dog for Trouble'.

Which is what almost everyone does to a dog who jumps up.

You'll walk in the front door from a long day at work, your dog will run over and jump up on you, and you'll subconsciously reach down and rub his head. In effect, rewarding trouble.

Sure you'll then push him off you and tell him to get "Off". But all the dog knows is that if he runs over and jumps up on you he'll get pet. And if you don't pay attention to this you'll actually train your dog to run over and jump on every new person he sees!

So how do you fix it?

First realize what your dog wants when he jumps up. Does he want attention? If so, do NOT give it to him. Make a strong effort to completely ionone the jumping up.
That means no eye contact, no reaching for the dog with your hands, and no talking to the dog.

Second, set a goal for a behaviour you'd like to start rewarding your dog for doing INSTEAD of jumping up.Personally for me, this is a dog that will stay on all fours.
You may decide you'd like a dog to sit at your feet, or lay down. Whatever you choose, it doesn't matter, just pick something.

And lastly... once you've stopped Paying for Trouble behaviours, you need to switch to Paying for the Positive behaviour you'd like your dog to do for attention besides jumping up.

That means that you only pay attention, pet, look at or talk to your dog if he greets you on all fours, or whatever your goal behaviour is.

Do this enough times and your dog will realize that it's easier to get the attention he so highly craves by keeping all four paws on the ground, instead of jumping up.

If you'll just do this consistently for 5 days you'll be able to break his jump up habit.

Does your dog love you?

The “Desire To Please” Myth
A common fallacy people have about dogs is that they have a “desire to please” us.

Some people think that our love and praise is all a dog needs as a motivator.

Your dog doesn’t have a desire to please you; he only has a desire to please himself.

If making you happy brings good things to him, I guess this could be construed as a desire to please, but most dogs aren’t willing to work for just praise, when there are other things in the environment that are higher on the reward scale.

If you dog seems to be responding to praise only while learning a behavior, then there is also likely the desire to avoid a punishment too. Praise is, however, a good way to let a dog know he’s on the right track to getting a reward.

If you think your dog will be obedient just because it makes you happy, you need to accept the fact that your dog doesn’t think you are God and instead, love your dog for the thinking being that he is.

PUNISHMENT

What has this got to do with training dogs?

Every time you give a treat to a dog there is also the possibility that you won’t give them the treat. If the dog is expecting a treat and you do not fulfil that expectation you punish the dog.

Taking away the possibility of earning a reward is negative punishment. It can be an extremely effective way of not only changing behaviour in dogs, but also of communicating that change.

Every time we prevent our dog doing something that it wanted to do we inflict a little punishment.

Standing still to teach no pulling on the lead : PUNISHMENT.

Painting Chew-Stop on the furniture legs so they taste bad: PUNISHMENT.

Saying No when your toast drops on the floor to stop them eating it: PUNISHMENT.

Being put in the crate or back room for jumping at visitors: PUNISHMENT.

NOT ALL PUNISHMENTS ARE ACCEPTABLE

We must draw the line at punishments that might cause the breakdown of a relationship, or have welfare concerns for the dog, such as dragging around on the lead, digs in the ribs, hold downs, alpha rolls, and the like, because we have no desire to have a relationship based on fear.

What you want is a relationship based on mutual rules. No one gets everything they want. No one gets their way every time. Teaching a dog that they can earn rewards, be they treats, the chance for a game or our affection, for doing the right thing, has the consequence that when they do the wrong thing these opportunities disappear. Rewards and punishments go together.

Rules are necessary, consistency is vital, firmness can be appropriate, but brutality is not.

Dangerous dogs law in spain

Dangerous dogs

Any person owning a potentially dangerous dog (perros potencialmente peligrosos) in Spain must have an appropriate licence (by law of article 3 of the Royal Decree 287/2002, of 22 of March 2002) and the dog must be registered with the municipality. But added on to that are the things your type of dog was originally bred for. Dogs find any instinctive behaviour – the things they were bred for – fun to do.
Labradors revel in retrieving, Greyhounds get a kick out of chasing & Collies get high on herding. That is not to say you can’t train a Greyhound to retrieve, but expect it to be more difficult than training a Labrador. Anything your dog has been bred for will be easier to train because they already like to do it. The down side is that, for the same reasons, it can be very difficult to train a dog not to do something they have been bred for.
Mixed breeds can get a mixture of behaviour. This can actually be easier, for example a lab/collie cross may like chasing after things AND retrieving them back! What types of behaviour has your dog inherited?

Source:David Ryan: Certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist.

If you want to learn more about this and put some techniques into practice to train you dog then enrol at Calahonda Pet Dog School www.k9handlers.com

Help for my puppy owners

Now that your puppy has settled into his new home and family, he/she needs to be introduced to as many different types of people as possible. Being unfamiliar with someone’s appearance or a new place can be intimidating for your puppy, so help them build the confidence they need to cope with in our world.

In addition to integrating your puppy into your home life, it is vitally important that your puppy learns how to be friendly and sociable with other people and animals they may meet, and not just other dogs. Socialization is an ongoing process that is not just confined to puppy classes, but starts as soon as you bring your puppy home and introduce them to your family and any pets you may already have. Puppies have to make a sudden transition from the familiar comfort and security of their first home with their mothers and littermates and face the unfamiliar sights and sounds of their new environment. Some puppies may be confident and others may be shy, but, whatever their nature, they are all highly inquisitive. By exposing your pup to lots of new situations and unfamiliar people of all ages, and to other animals, you can make sure they develops the confidence he will need to live in our human environment.

Walking your dog in the Summer

Most dogs love to be taken out on walks, and it's fun to see well-behaved dogs being walked on leashes. Their heads are up and their tails are up and wagging. Some of the walking, trotting or jogging dogs even seem to be smiling.

But in the dog days of summer, when temperatures soar into the 30s and 40s, walking dogs can be a risky business.

Just how hot are those streets and tiled walkways in towns? At 2 p.m. Tuesday when AccuWeather said in Marbella temperatures were 36 degrees and climbing, I put a little kitchen thermometer flat on the pavement. The mercury quickly climbed to 120F or 48C degrees -- the maximum reading on that thermometer.
Hot roads and pavements can burn paw pads. And because dogs' bodies are much closer to the hot asphalt they can heat up quickly, according to the Web site Petfinder.com.

Some things about some Dogs .

Some dogs get big.
Some dogs bark a lot.
When you walk a dog, you have to pick up the mess.
Dogs need a secure garden.
Dogs cannot be left on their own all day.
When you plan to go out for the day the dog has to be included in your plans.
Dogs can get sick and mess up the carpet.
Dogs can chew furniture.
Dogs shed hair.
Dogs get lonely when they are by themselves.
Dogs can chew your toys.
Dogs can get sick and cost a lot of money at the vet.
Dogs can be picky about their food.
Dogs jump on people.
Dirty dog dishes need to be washed.
Dogs need baths.
Dogs scratch, bite, and chew.
Dogs can’t always understand what you are saying.
Dogs can get fleas, worms, and ticks.
Dogs can run away.
Dogs can bother the neighbours.
Dogs need to go for walks.
Dogs need things like leashes, collars, and toys which cost money.
Dogs need a pet sitter or boarding when you want to go away.
Dogs need frequent brushing.
Dogs need exercise.
Friends or family might be allergic to dogs.
Dogs need obedience training.
Dogs drool on your hands and on your clothes.
Someday your dog will die.

Dogs and Hot Weather

All dogs
During hot weather care should be taken with ALL dogs. Always have fresh water available. Always make sure they have shelter and shade to stay in. Never leave your dog in a car. Many people still think it is ok to leave their dog in a car if they leave the window down, DO NOT do this. Your dog could still quickly over heat and this could be fatal. There are still so many cases of dogs being found dead in over heated cars, here at dogs.info we want to stress dont leave your dog in a car! Even if you have a window down it is not enough to keep a car cool. Even if you leave water in the car it is not enough to cool your dog! If you park in the shade the car will still over heat, and as the sun moves the car may no longer be in the shade on your return. Even if your only going to be a few minutes out of your car, dont leave them, temperatures can soar very quickly. Be safe and dont take the risk!

Brachycephalic dogs
All dogs with “flat faced” nose and head structure are technically called “brachycephalic”. Dogs with this structure feel the effects of warm surroundings and exertion sooner than dogs with more typical nose and head structure. Brachycephalic dogs include: British bulldogs, French bulldogs, pugs, pekingnese, and boston terriers amongst others.

All brachycephalic dog owners MUST know and understand the following

Hot weather can be fatal to a these dogs, they don’t even need to be moving about in it to succumb to the heat. Please make sure that any exercise is given early in the morning or late in the evening, don’t be tempted to go for a nice Sunday afternoon stroll when it is very sunny or hot. Also please don’t allow your dog to lay out in the sun for long periods, they do not know when they have had enough and it doesn’t take long for their panting to become out of control.

How to recognise when your dog is too hot:

Any exercise will make him pant but watch for when the panting becomes "heaving" this is the earliest sign that he is getting too hot. When the panting has become loud and is becoming a "roar" he has already become too hot and the outcome can be fatal.

Stages of overheating:

Your dog will begin to "heave" as he pants
Your dog will begin to "roar" - best described as sounding like severe asthma
He will begin to look tired and distressed
His tongue will be very floppy and very red in colour
His body temperature will rise (normal temp approx 38.6)
His airway will swell and his throat become full of white foam (caused through the excessive panting)
He will quickly become exhausted and will fighting for breath
He could die

How to prevent overheating:

Do not allow your dog to lay out in the day time sunshine
Do not walk your dog in hot weather
During hot weather keep your dog inside during the hottest part of the day

How to deal with overheating:

Lower his body temperature: Always ensure that you have ice to hand during the summer months. Pour cold water over your dog, especially around his head, rub ice around his head and under his tail (around his rectum). If possible stand him in a cold bath and keep going with the ice until the breathing is less laboured.
Clear the airway: Squirt some lemon juice (from one of those plastic lemon shaped bottles that you squirt on your pancakes) into the back of his throat, he will hate you for it, but the lemon juice will quickly break up the excess foam and clear the throat. Do not allow him to drink a lot of water as this can cause him to vomit.
Keep him calm: Once you have reduced his panic keep him in a quiet place and keep a close eye on him.
If this doesn’t work then you need to get to a vet as quickly as possible - put a cold damp towel under him for the journey

Brachycephalic dogs overheat quickly because of the shape of their throats, their soft palates are almost always too long and when they get very hot they cannot pant sufficiently to keep their body temperature down, their attempts to pant quickly cause the production of foam which in turn blocks the throat and causes laboured breathing and eventually they will begin to roar as they try to breath through the blockage.

Summer Check list:

Plenty of ice
Jiff Lemon Juice
If you need to go out freeze some damp towels the day before and take with you together with both of the above items and plenty of cold water.
In an emergency you can substitute use packets of frozen veggies for the ice. Find a horse trough, stream, river or pond to stand your dog in or knock on the nearest house and ask to borrow a hose pipe. Remember this can happen at any time, even if up until now he has coped perfectly OK with the heat. Prevention is much better than cure.

Note: Stress can often bring on the same symptoms and should be treated in the same way as described above.

Source:http://www.dogs.info/healthcare/hotweather.html

Advantages of owning a Mongrel

If you decide to buy/adopt a pet you should know there are many advantages when owning a mongrel.

Several studies have shown that mixed-breed dogs have a health advantage. A German study finds that Mongrels require less veterinary treatment. Studies in Sweden have found that Mongrel dogs are less prone to many diseases than the average pure bred dog and, referring to death rates, Mongrels were consistently in the low risk category.

In many cases mongrels are aware of the inhumane conditions in which they have previously been living; therefore, they are more likely to show sings of complete adoration and appreciation to you for saving them if you pick up one off the street or go through the adoption process. Most mongrel dogs are not used to having someone care about them on a consistent basis and will welcome your care and affection with open paws. Some of these dogs may have even come from places in which they were beaten—having a loving home means more to these dogs than some people realise.

In most cases, when you adopt a dog, you are saving a life. For those that choose to adopt a dog, this feeling can be very rewarding.
source:www.mongrelsoftheworld.com

Gluten FREE dog food

As an owner you want to provide your dog with everything he needs to help him lead a long, happy and active life. My three dogs completely ignored her and I walked on. All of us that were working with David the Dogman then knew that they were destined to go on and do well, as Arnie had the ability and Gary the enthusiasm!

Over the years Gary spent at the school this enthusiasm never waned, and the bond between him and Arnie continued to grow, and both have achieved great success, in Obedience and Agility, as well as being introduced to defence work with David. Gary never got stressed or angry if things didn't go quite right in those early puppy days, and would often arrive early to work with Arnie before the class, giving him time to settle before launching himself totally in what we were doing. Now with 3 dogs, his ability to understand each of their needs is a testament to the competent and patient handler that he has become. Gary has all the qualities needed to pass this well learnt knowledge on to others, and I wish him nothing but success!

K9 Handlers School References

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 136px; height: 94px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fY2N-krmsu4/TTLwhdXXUVI/AAAAAAAAAFc/bW9zFHxLdc8/s320/image005.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5562772947364958546" />

Commitment Firmness but Kindness

http://www.thedogman.net

Skype: dogman812

Gary attended my school with his little bundle of fluf who we came to know as Arnie.

Throughout the years Gary was a regular attender no matter what the weather. <![endif]-->
I came to Spain in 1999 after a 22 year career in the Armed Forces.

In 2005 I enrolled in a local dog school in San Pedro Marbella run by the world famous David “The Dogman” for whom I have a great and forever lasting gratitude to.

Twice a week I attended this school with my then, 10 week old German shepherd dog where we were both put through our paces by one of the Costa del Sol’s most experienced trainers, Viv Eales (B.A.G.S.D) both during the lessons and for many hours of discussions afterwards.

I can describe the following 3 years at this school as my apprentice training to become a top class handler.

In 2008 I helped to set up and run a local Marbella based school, but missed the excitement of handling Arnie, my now 3 year old GSD on the agility course and obedience competitions, so returned to concentrate on my now 2 dogs Arnie and Tilly.

The time is now right for me to utilise all the experience gained from training people in the Armed Forces and my love of dog handling to pass as much of this on to local dog owners in the Mijas Costa area to enable them to become confident and responsible handlers.
